Ultravox’s iconic bassist, Chris Cross, known offstage as Chris Allen, has tragically passed away at the age of 71. His bandmate Midge Ure broke the news, commemorating Cross as the ‘glue that held the band together’ in an emotional tribute.

The untimely death of Cross, who reportedly died on 25th March, was disclosed by Ure on social media, marking the end of an era for the band and their fans.

Originally forming in London in 1974 under the name Tiger Lily, Ultravox rose to prominence with hits like ‘Vienna’, ‘Dancing with Tears in My Eyes’, and ‘Reap The Wild Wind’ during the peak of the new wave era.

‘Vienna’, one of Ultravox’s most renowned tracks, was a defining anthem of the synth-pop movement in the early 1980s. It notably made an appearance at the historic 1985 Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium.

Following a period of transition that saw John Foxx leave, Ultravox experienced a resurgence with the addition of Ure, propelling the band to new heights with collaborative hits like ‘Vienna’ – a tune that narrowly missed the top spot on the charts to Joe Dolce’s ‘Shaddap You Face’.

Fans and industry figures took to social media to express their condolences and tributes, with notable mentions from journalists like Alastair Coleman and artists like James Tansley honoring Cross’s musical legacy.
