Urgent Call for Pensioners to Check Eligibility for Pension Credit
Pensioners receiving Council Tax support are being urged to check if they qualify for Pension Credit, which enables access to the Winter Fuel Payment this year.
Pension Credit, averaging £3,900 per year, not only provides the Winter Fuel Payments but also offers additional benefits. These benefits may include reductions in electricity bills and a free TV licence for individuals over the age of 75. It is essential for pensioners to submit their applications for Pension Credit by 21 December 2024 to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment.
There are concerns that approximately 880,000 households in the UK may be missing out on Pension Credit. Recent government announcements indicate that only the most in-need individuals will receive the Winter Fuel Allowance this winter.
Cllr Stephen Harness, Portfolio Holder for Finance, emphasized the importance of checking eligibility for Pension Credit, stating, “Many families have become accustomed to the winter payments, which provide crucial support for heating during the cold months. Despite the reduction in payments, assistance remains available for those in greatest need.”
For the application process, pensioners will need information about themselves and their partners, as well as bank account details. Depending on the application method, they may need the name of their bank or building society, sort code, and account number.
There are multiple ways to apply for Pension Credit:
1. Online: Pensioners can search for Pension Credit, which leads to an online application form. Local libraries are available for those requiring digital assistance.
2. By Phone: A family member or friend can call on behalf of those unable to use the phone. The Pension Credit claim line can be reached at 0800 99 1234, and for those using textphones, the number is 0800 169 0133.
3. By Post: To apply via post, pensioners can call the claim line to request a form. The filled form should be sent to the Pension Service at the designated freepost address.
