Utah’s Mike Lee Named Chair of Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee
Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee is poised to take over the chairmanship of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, following the Republican Party’s successful bid to reclaim control of the U.S. Senate after the recent elections. In an announcement made on Tuesday, Lee expressed his enthusiasm for assuming the role, describing himself as «humbled and honored» to take the gavel. He stated, «Time to get to work and unleash American energy.» This marks Lee’s first major committee leadership since his election to the Senate in 2010, having previously chaired the Joint Economic Committee.
Congratulations for Lee’s new role poured in from various political figures, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Utah Senator-elect John Curtis. Curtis expressed enthusiasm about Lee’s new position, saying, «I’m thrilled to see Utah’s senior Senator Mike Lee as the new chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. With his leadership, I believe we can make significant strides in ensuring open access to our public lands, expanding energy opportunities, unlocking critical mineral resources, and safeguarding Utah’s treasured landscapes for generations to come.» Governor Cox echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the potential benefits for the country under Lee’s leadership as they «gear up for a new age of energy abundance.»
Senator Lee succeeded outgoing Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who previously chaired the committee responsible for addressing energy and mineral resources policies. Lee’s opportunity to chair the committee came following the promotion of Wyoming Senator John Barrasso to Senate majority whip, thereby leaving the position open.
Although reportedly considered for the role of U.S. Attorney General under former President Donald Trump, Lee stated his preference to remain in the Senate. He asserted, «I have the job I want,» and expressed eagerness to work with President Trump and Congress to implement the Republican agenda.
Further appointments in the Senate include Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who will lead the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who will chair the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Beyond his chairmanship, Lee has hired Wendy Baig as the staff director for the Energy Committee. Baig previously collaborated with Lee on the Judiciary Committee and served as the executive director of the Senate Steering Committee during Lee’s chairmanship.
