Valencia CF vs Real Betis: A Match Marked by Tragedy and Recovery
Rubén Baraja, the head coach of Valencia CF, addressed the press ahead of their return to LaLiga competition after a month-long hiatus due to a natural disaster, known locally as the DANA. The storm caused significant destruction in Valencia and surrounding areas. «I want to extend all our support and encouragement to those affected by this catastrophe,» Baraja stated, empathizing with those who suffered during the event.
The upcoming match against Real Betis is of particular significance to Valencia CF, marking their first home game since the tragedy. «It is a special and different match for multiple reasons. We have not played for a while, and what has happened is seriously grave. Many club members have experienced this hardship, and we want to reflect our pain during the match,» Baraja emphasized.
The Spanish coach also hinted at tactical plans, speaking of player recovery and team formation: «We have worked on details to grow as a team. There’s versatility in switching formations during matches, which I appreciate.»
This Saturday, Valencia CF will host Real Betis at the Mestalla Stadium. The fixture is shadowed by emotion, with Valencia striving to climb from the bottom of the league table, having accumulated only seven points so far but with two fewer matches played. In contrast, Real Betis, sitting seventh in the table, aims to secure a European spot.
Real Betis enters the match with several key injuries, including players like Bellerín, Mendy, and Isco among others. However, the squad saw the inclusion of young talents, such as Guirao, to fill in the gaps left by absentees.
From the Real Betis camp, manager Manuel Pellegrini addressed media inquiries about the heavy injury list but insisted on focusing on the players available: «The system is not as important as the players’ performance. We will rely on the youth team members like Guirao and Mateo to step up.»
Significant figures within the football community, such as former player Joaquín Sánchez, extended their solidarity with those affected by the DANA, reflecting on personal connections to Valencia. «Circumstances like these are unexpected, and we’ve tried to help from afar,» Joaquín expressed.
The match, scheduled for 14:00 on Saturday, will be officiated by Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, with Javier Iglesias Villanueva assisting from the VAR. It will be broadcast live through Movistar LaLiga.
As both teams prepare for this poignant match, the focus remains on delivering a performance that honors the local community’s resilience and determination to overcome recent adversities.
