VCU Triumphs Over Miami in Charleston Classic Showdown
In a closely contested seventh-place game at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) emerged victorious over the University of Miami with a score of 77-70. The match, held in Charleston, South Carolina, was marked by standout performances from both teams.
Joe Bamisile matched his season-high by scoring 22 points for VCU, contributing significantly with five rebounds. His teammate, Max Shulga, came close to achieving a triple-double, recording 18 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Zeb Jackson added 12 points to aid VCU in breaking a two-game losing streak, raising their season record to 5-2.
For Miami, Lynn Kidd led the scoring with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jalen Blackmon and Nijel Pack contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Hurricanes, now at a 3-3 record, struggled with a slow start, falling behind to the Rams’ early 10-2 advantage. This early momentum for VCU was bolstered by Phillip Russell‘s successful four-point play, giving the team a decisive lead within the first few minutes.
Miami attempted several comebacks throughout the game. In the first half, they reduced the deficit to 20-19, spurred by A.J. Staton-McCray’s layup. However, VCU responded with a 13-2 run, aided by Bamisile’s notable 3-point shooting, extending their lead to 42-33 by halftime.
Despite Miami’s efforts to narrow the gap in the second half, getting the lead down to five on two occasions, VCU managed to widen their lead to 16 points following a 13-2 run. The Hurricanes mounted a late 10-0 surge, reducing VCU’s advantage to 72-66 with just over a minute remaining. Nevertheless, VCU’s proficiency in managing free throws in the closing stretch ensured their victory.
VCU’s head coach and players praised their teamwork and resilience after the win, highlighting key strategic plays and defensive adjustments as crucial to the outcome. The Rams’ performance in Charleston reflects their potential for the season as they aim to build on this momentum.
