COTONOU, Benin – Recently, Verra conducted a two-day workshop aimed at boosting local expertise in carbon markets. This exciting event, held from June 18 to 20, 2024, is part of a series of workshops planned around the globe.

The workshop covered a range of important topics. Participants got a closer look at how to obtain Article 6 labels on the Verra Registry, Verra’s new cookstove methodology, and the recently released REDD methodology.

Adidjatou Hassan, president of the Carbon Project Registration Authority (AEPC) in Benin, spoke about the cooperation between Verra and the AEPC. She stressed that the workshop served to support project integrity and regulatory readiness, especially under the Article 6.4 framework.

This gathering was not just for the locals; it included government representatives, international organizations, and NGOs. They discussed the rising global demand for carbon credits and the essential reporting requirements that come with it, particularly under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

In addition to that, attendees also focused on the commitments made in Benin’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The event emphasized how vital these certifications are for projects wishing to be part of Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the top greenhouse gas crediting program worldwide.

Overall, the workshop was a step forward for both Benin and Verra in their mission to navigate the complexities of carbon markets and climate action more effectively.
