Veteran Matildas Goalkeeper Lydia Williams Announces Retirement from International Football
Australia’s veteran goalkeeper, Lydia Williams, has made a heartfelt announcement regarding her retirement from international football following the conclusion of the Matildas‘ campaign at Paris 2024. Williams, who boasts a remarkable 19-year tenure with the national team, will depart as the longest-serving player in Matildas history.
Having made her debut for the Matildas back in 2005 at just 15 years old, Williams has since garnered an impressive 103 caps, participating in five FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments, four Asian Cup campaigns, and two Olympic Games throughout her illustrious career.
Williams notably played a pivotal role as the first-choice goalkeeper during the Matildas’ triumphant AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign in 2021. Her extensive professional journey has seen her ply her trade in various leagues across Australia, America, and Europe, with her current stint seeing her back in action for Melbourne Victory.
Recently named as a goalkeeper in the inaugural A-League Women All Stars team, Williams is set to feature in the squad’s upcoming exhibition match against Arsenal Women scheduled for May 24 at Marvel Stadium.
