Veteran NFL Quarterback Released from Giants, Seeks New Team
The much-discussed era of the veteran quarterback ended this past week in New York. Sources indicate that the player, recently released by the Giants, may soon find a new opportunity within the league. The decision to release the quarterback was executed on Friday, and he is expected to clear waivers by Monday at 4 p.m. ET.
Once the player clears waivers, he will become a free agent, granting him the liberty to negotiate with other teams. Financial considerations play a pivotal role, as any team claiming him would assume responsibility for the $11.83 million remaining on his contract, alongside a $23 million injury guarantee for the next season.
It is anticipated that the veteran may opt to join a practice squad. This route would allow for a smooth integration into a new team without necessitating adjustments to the present 53-man roster. As of now, the Giants have adjusted their lineup to start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday.
The quarterback, who has amassed over $108 million in earnings since being drafted in the first round in 2019, has concluded his tenure with the Giants with a record of 24-44-1. His potential landing spots remain varied, with potential new teams still being considered as his future unfolds.
In the meantime, Saquon Barkley, who experienced a similar transition, expressed his hopes for the quarterback during a media session. Barkley, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, conveyed his support, stating, «I’ve been in contact with him. Our friendship has stayed close throughout the whole process. It sucks to see how everything went down for him over there.»
Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles and currently leads the NFC in rushing, shared his optimism for his former teammate’s future, «Hopefully, wherever he ends up next, they’re going to get a guy who comes in and works. It didn’t work for me over there, and I’m doing well over here. Hopefully, he can find the same fresh start and success.»
Despite needs within the league due to injuries, the Dallas Cowboys have decided against pursuing the quarterback. Following the season-ending hamstring injury of their player, the Cowboys’ executive vice president, Stephen Jones, emphasized confidence in their existing roster, stating they would not seek new acquisitions via waivers. Any potential team claiming the quarterback would incur nearly $12 million in financial obligations.
