Veteran Nigerian Singer Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away

In a heartbreaking announcement, the children of beloved Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu have shared that their mother has passed away. They revealed the sad news in a statement on Wednesday, signed by her sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende.

According to her children, Onyeka passed away late on the night of July 30, 2024, while in Lagos, Nigeria. They shared that she had just finished an amazing performance when her health took a turn, leading to her being rushed to Reddington Hospital.

In their statement, the family mentioned that doctors did their utmost to save her life but, sadly, she could not be saved. They described Onyeka as an ‘icon and legend’ who touched the lives of many through her music, acting, and charitable work.

The family also expressed their gratitude to those who stood by Onyeka during her final moments. They specifically thanked Peter Obi, John Momoh, and several other friends and family members who provided support during the difficult time. Governor Alex Otti reached out to offer his condolences shortly after her passing.

Onyeka Onwenu was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State. She started her music career with her debut album ‘For the Love of You’ in 1981, and she is well-known for her hit song ‘One Love,’ among many other tracks she has released over the years.
