Vikings Sign Veteran Cornerback Stephon Gilmore
The Minnesota Vikings have made a significant move by signing veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The deal was confirmed Sunday morning and is a one-year contract worth up to $10 million, with $7 million guaranteed.
Gilmore, who is 33 years old, is expected to step into the starting lineup alongside Byron Murphy Jr. and Shaq Griffin. The Vikings have been facing challenges in their cornerback positions due to a series of injuries and the tragic passing of rookie Khyree Jackson.
During his career, Gilmore has earned a reputation as an outstanding player, representing the Pro Bowl five times and earning two All-Pro honors. Last season, he started every game for the Dallas Cowboys, where he showcased his skills with 13 passes defended, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
Before signing, Gilmore visited the Vikings’ facility and met with head coach Kevin O’Connell and defensive backs coach Daronte Jones. O’Connell expressed his respect for Gilmore’s extensive career, noting that he has played at a high level for many years.
Another advantage for Gilmore is his prior relationship with defensive coordinator Brian Flores. They worked together while Gilmore played for the New England Patriots, where Flores was the defensive play caller during their Super Bowl-winning season.
Despite recovering from shoulder surgery earlier this year, Gilmore’s experience could be immediately beneficial for the Vikings as they prepare for their season opener against the New York Giants.
This signing reflects the Vikings’ determination to remain competitive in the upcoming season, especially following injuries to several cornerbacks. The addition of Gilmore marks the fifth veteran cornerback acquisition for the team this summer.
