Volcanic Eruption Captivates Air Passengers in Iceland
REYKJAVIK, Iceland – Air travelers arriving in Reykjavik, Iceland were witnesses to a dramatic natural spectacle on Thursday evening. Passengers aboard an Icelandair flight were granted a unique aerial view of a volcanic eruption unfolding on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
This marks the seventh eruption of the volcano this year. Notably, the eruption led to the temporary closure of the widely visited Blue Lagoon hot spring after lava flowed into the resort’s parking area. «Webcam video from the Icelandic Meteorological Office shows lava flowing into the parking lot of the Blue Lagoon Resort,» the office reported.
No injuries have been recorded from this latest eruption. However, precautionary measures were taken as the country’s emergency management agency evacuated 50 individuals from the neighboring town of Grindavik when the eruptions commenced on Wednesday night.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office indicated that the current volcanic activity does not emit sufficient ash to disrupt air travel. The region has seen renewed volcanic activity since 2021, following 800 years of dormancy.
