Walker Kessler Sidelined Due to Hip Bursitis
Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler is set to miss another game due to a bout of hip bursitis, as reported by Andy Larsen. Kessler’s condition has raised concerns about the length of his absence, given the potential for trochanteric bursitis to cause prolonged discomfort.
Trochanteric bursitis is an inflammation of the hip’s bursa, which are small sacs filled with fluid, designed to facilitate joint movement by reducing friction. This type of bursitis is relatively common, affecting approximately five in every 1,000 adults, predominantly impacting women and individuals middle-aged or older. However, it can also affect younger, active adults who engage heavily in sports such as walking, running, or cycling. Often, a tight iliotibial band, a leg connective tissue, exacerbates the condition by increasing irritation in the bursa area through friction.
Walker Kessler’s injury has allowed other members of the Jazz, including young talent Kyle Filipowski, a chance to shine in his absence. The team has observed the performance of these players, potentially informing future lineup decisions.
The absence, now extending to its fifth missed game, occurs as the Jazz prepares to face the Los Angeles Lakers. According to a source, the absence of Kessler has provided additional opportunities for players like Filipowski to contribute, during Lakers’ games, especially considering the Lakers’ current defensive rankings of 26th in efficiency and 23rd in rebounding, which could allow the Jazz to exploit these vulnerabilities.
