Washington Commanders to Honor Sean Taylor with New Statue
The Washington Commanders have announced plans to build a statue honoring the late safety and Ring of Fame inductee Sean Taylor. This new statue will replace the original memorial installation at Commanders Field, which has already been removed.
Involving his daughter, Jackie Taylor, in the design process, the team aims to create a tribute that accurately reflects his legacy. «I’m thankful to Josh Harris and the Commanders family for their continued commitment to keep my dad’s legacy alive,» Jackie Taylor stated.
A spokesperson for the Commanders recognized that the previous installation did not adequately honor one of the franchise’s most iconic players. The team is now dedicated to unveiling a statue that will properly celebrate Sean Taylor’s impact on the organization, fan base, and community.
Sean Taylor played for Washington for all four seasons of his NFL career, starting from 2004. Selected with the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft, he quickly became known as one of the league’s top young safeties and garnered immense fan support.
Tragically, on November 27, 2007, Taylor passed away due to injuries sustained from a shooting during an attempted robbery at his Florida home. The NFL honored him posthumously with a Second Team All-Pro selection in 2007, and the following year, he was inducted into the Washington Ring of Fame.
His jersey number 21 was retired by the team during the 2021 season, making him the fourth player in franchise history to receive this honor. Jackie Taylor expressed her gratitude for the support from the fan base, stating that it allows her father to be a permanent part of the burgundy and gold family.
