Wayne Bennett Agrees to Three-Year, $3 Million Deal with South Sydney Rabbitohs
Legendary rugby league coach Wayne Bennett has reached a pivotal agreement with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, sealing a lucrative three-year deal worth a substantial $3 million. The deal, though pending official signing, signifies Bennett’s anticipated return to Redfern, where he previously had a successful coaching stint.
Sources suggest that Souths’ powerhouse figures are set to finalize the contract with the 74-year-old during the upcoming Magic Round, underlining the commitment from both parties. Bennett, who recently served as the inaugural head coach for the Dolphins, will rejoin the Rabbitohs in 2025 after departing the club four years prior.
The agreement reportedly includes performance-based incentives tied to the Rabbitohs’ on-field success, showcasing a shared vision of winning and excellence. However, due to Bennett’s history of last-minute changes, particularly moving from the Roosters to the Dragons in 2008, Rabbitohs officials remain cautiously optimistic until the contract is officially inked.
Despite rumors linking Bennett to a potential coaching role at the Eels, who are facing challenges under Brad Arthur, the Rabbitohs have been at the forefront of negotiations. Chief Executive Blake Solly spearheaded talks and engaged in discussions with Bennett, with additional input from part owner Russell Crowe throughout the courtship process.
South Sydney, currently languishing at the bottom of the NRL ladder following the recent axing of coach Jason Demetriou, are hopeful that Bennett’s return will ignite a resurgence. Bennett’s prior tenure with the club from 2019 to 2021 saw the Rabbitohs reach two preliminary finals and a Grand Final, albeit falling short against the Panthers in his final match in charge.
As the Rabbitohs plan to make an official announcement post their meeting with Bennett during Magic Round, the rugby league community eagerly anticipates the coaching maestro’s homecoming and the potential impact on South Sydney’s fortunes.
