Western Cape Braces for Severe Weather as Cold Fronts Hit the Province
The Western Cape province is gearing up for a bout of severe weather as a series of cold fronts are set to impact the region over the coming days. Anton Bredell, the Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning MEC, highlighted the preparations undertaken by the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) in response to the imminent adverse weather conditions.
The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued warnings for heavy rains and winds across the province, with special attention given to areas like ward 99 in Khayelitsha, where significant damage has already been reported due to strong winds earlier in the week.
Eskom reported line faults affecting various areas, while the Department of Water and Sanitation is closely monitoring dam levels, including the Wemmershoek Dam managed by the City of Cape Town, which is at 77.8% capacity and plays a crucial role in water management for the region.
Minister Bredell emphasized the need for accurate information dissemination, particularly regarding dam levels, to avoid unnecessary panic among residents. He urged the public to rely on verified sources for updates on the ongoing weather situation.
The PDMC is in constant communication with relevant stakeholders to monitor the evolving weather patterns and ensure preparedness for any emergencies that may arise as a result of the inclement weather in the Western Cape.
