WestJet flights faced major disruptions as the airline’s mechanics’ union initiated a strike, leading to the cancellation of over 150 flights across different airports in B.C.
The Vancouver International Airport, Kelowna International Airport, Victoria International Airport, along with smaller airports in Abbotsford, Comox, Kamloops, Nanaimo, Prince George, and Terrace were all impacted by the cancellations.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) strike was prompted by WestJet’s alleged refusal to engage in negotiations with the union, affecting more than 20,000 passengers during the Canada Day weekend.
Following Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan’s arbitration order, which aimed to resolve the conflict, it was expected that service disruptions would be avoided.
However, the AMFA decided to go ahead with the strike, citing that the arbitration order did not explicitly prevent them from taking action.
WestJet stated that they are actively working to minimize disruptions and expressed disappointment over the strike action taken by the mechanics’ union.
During the strike, over 150 flights were canceled, with more cancellations anticipated in the absence of a resolution or immediate intervention.
Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan issued a statement regarding the situation, expressing concerns over the Canada Industrial Relations Board’s decision and stated intentions to safeguard the interests of all parties involved.
