Widow of Kirti Chakra Awardee Recollects Love Story and Ultimate Sacrifice

During a poignant ceremony, Smriti Singh, the widow of the late Captain Anshuman Singh, reminisced about their enduring love story and the heartbreaking sacrifice he made in the line of duty. Captain Anshuman Singh, posthumously honored with the prestigious Kirti Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu, displayed extraordinary courage and selflessness that led to the ultimate sacrifice.

Reflecting on their initial encounter, Smriti fondly recalled their meeting during college days, describing it as ‘love at first sight.’ The duo crossed paths in an engineering college, and despite Anshuman’s subsequent enrollment at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), their relationship blossomed over the years, culminating in their marriage in February 2023 after his graduation.

In a heart-wrenching account, Smriti shared details of their last conversation before the devastating incident. Only two months into their marriage, Captain Singh was deployed to the challenging terrain of Siachen. On July 18, the couple engaged in a lengthy discussion about their envisioned future, contemplating building a home and starting a family over the next five decades.

Tragedy struck the following morning, July 19, when Smriti received the devastating news of her husband’s untimely demise. Struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss, she recalled the initial disbelief and shock that enveloped her and their loved ones.

The solemn ceremony where President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Kirti Chakra to Smriti Singh, in the presence of Captain Singh’s mother, showcased a poignant tribute to the fallen hero’s gallantry. The Defence Ministry of India and DD National shared a touching video capturing the emotional moment, underscoring Captain Anshuman Singh’s valor and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
