The prestigious Wimbledon 2024 tournament commenced on June 24 with an exciting lineup of first-round matches, setting the stage for players to vie for a spot in the finals. Reigning men’s singles champion Carlos Alcaraz secured a spot in the finals after a thrilling victory over Daniil Medvedev in the penultimate round held on Friday.

The showdown for the men’s singles title is all set as Alcaraz is poised to clash with the formidable Novak Djokovic in the finals scheduled for Sunday. In a significant prize money update, this year’s Wimbledon men’s singles victor will pocket an impressive £2.7 million, signifying a substantial increase from the 2023 prize purse, according to official figures released by the governing body of Wimbledon.

Equally, the victorious woman competitor in the singles draw will also walk away with a lucrative £2.7 million, showcasing nearly a 15% escalation from the previous year’s earnings. Notably, Wimbledon has upheld gender equality in prize money since 2007, ensuring parallel rewards for both men’s and women’s singles champions.

In the women’s final held on Saturday, Barbora Krejcikova emerged victorious against Jasmine Paolini, securing her second Grand Slam title in an intense match that ended with a scoreline of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. A remarkable contrast can be drawn between the champion’s prize money in 1968, harking back to the initial prize distribution period.

The winners of the men’s and women’s doubles championships will each collect a substantial £650,000. The total prize pool for Wimbledon 2024 stands at an unprecedented £50,000,000, reflecting an increase of nearly 12% from the previous year.

Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Club, expressed her enthusiasm about the augmented prize fund, stating, «With this year’s championships only days away, I am delighted to announce a record prize money fund of £50 million, with increases for players in every round and across every event.»

Players claiming the runner-up spots in each draw will also receive generous payouts. The second-place finishers in the men’s and women’s singles draws are set to pocket £1.4 million each, while the doubles teams in the second position will earn £330,000.

A segment of the overall prize pool is allocated to players participating in the qualifying rounds, with their earnings escalating as they progress to the main draw’s initial matchups. Competitors breaking into the first round of Wimbledon’s primary singles draw will net £60,000, with the amount rising to £93,000 for the subsequent round, £143,000 for the third round, and £226,000 for the fourth round.

Additionally, quarter-finalists will receive £375,000, and semi-finalists are entitled to £715,000. Wimbledon also hosts wheelchair events encompassing singles and doubles competitions, with a separate prize distribution for these categories. Diede de Groot clinched her 15th consecutive Grand Slam singles title by triumphing in the women’s wheelchair final, capturing her sixth singles trophy at the All England Club.
