Winter Storm Northeast 2023

A powerful winter storm system is forecast to impact the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States this week, potentially disrupting early Thanksgiving travel plans for millions. Meteorologists from the FOX Forecast Center have indicated that dual storm systems will bring heavy rain, snow, and winds, creating dangerous travel conditions.

The initial storm began in the central United States, producing severe weather on Monday, including damaging winds that toppled tractor-trailers and spawned hailstorms. As this system progresses northward, it is predicted to draw in arctic air, resulting in significant snowfall across parts of the Dakotas and into the Upper Midwest.

Winter weather alerts have been issued across these regions, with Winter Storm Warnings in effect for cities such as Bismarck and Fargo in North Dakota. The National Weather Service (NWS) has reported that snow accumulation could reach between 4 to 7 inches, with wind gusts potentially reaching 50 miles per hour. The NWS has advised travelers to carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water.

The forecast suggests that snow totals across the Northern Tier and Upper Midwest will vary, with areas close to the Canadian border in North Dakota receiving a foot or more of snow. Northwestern Minnesota is expected to experience snowfall of up to 8 inches by midweek.

As the storm transitions eastward by midweek, cities such as Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are on alert for potential snow showers, with colder air wrapping around the system. Interstate travel, particularly on I-29 and I-94, is expected to be hazardous during this period.

A second, rapidly strengthening storm is anticipated to develop as the week progresses, affecting the Ohio River Valley and Great Lakes by Wednesday. As this system moves into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, it is expected to bring strong winds that will usher in cold air, conducive to snow across parts of these regions, including the Appalachian Mountains.

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas in West Virginia, highlighting the risk of strong wind gusts that could damage trees and cause power outages, especially in higher elevations. Meanwhile, much-needed rain is expected along the East Coast, which may aid in ongoing firefighting efforts following recent drought conditions. However, the FOX Forecast Center does not anticipate widespread flooding at this time.

As millions of travelers prepare to embark on their Thanksgiving journeys, the potential impact of these weather systems on road and air travel remains a primary concern. The current meteorological projections suggest a challenging weather period ahead as the holiday approaches.
