Wisconsin Badgers Ready for Season Opener Against Western Michigan
As the 2024 college football season kicks off, the Wisconsin Badgers are poised to take the field against the Western Michigan Broncos under the lights at Camp Randall Stadium. The game, scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET, marks the home opener for the Badgers, who finished last season with a disappointing record of 7-6.
Head coach Luke Fickell, entering his second year with the team, is looking for improvement this season. The Badgers will also face the University of South Dakota later in the schedule, as well as adapting to the changes in the Big Ten conference starting in late September.
The injury report for Week 1 shows no significant surprises, with a few players dealing with injuries sustained during training camp. Notably, second-string right tackle Barrett Nelson is among those unable to play, despite his previous availability. True freshman Heiberger, who had stood out during practice, has also been sidelined.
This season will also see a change in concession offerings at Camp Randall Stadium, as beer will now be sold in general seating areas. Previously, alcohol sales were restricted at college football games.
Wisconsin’s opponent, Western Michigan, has been predicted to finish seventh in their conference. Despite not being a high-caliber opponent on paper, the Badgers are advised to remain cautious due to the Broncos’ potential, including their five all-conference selections, featuring standout running back Jalen Buckley.
Under center for the Broncos is redshirt senior Hayden Wolff, who stands at 6 feet 5 inches and 235 pounds. Wolff only became the full-time starter in the latter part of last season but showed promise with strong performances in his final five games.
The Badgers will also have to contend with competing Wisconsinites on the Broncos’ roster. Key players include Muraski, listed as the No. 2 left tackle, Schuster at right guard, Tyler at defensive tackle, and Vandervest, who has seen significant playtime at right tackle.
This matchup is one of two Friday games for Wisconsin this season, with a regular-season finale scheduled against Minnesota also on a Friday.
Fans are eager to watch star cornerback Ricardo Hallman, who had an impressive season last year, leading the nation with seven interceptions. As game time approaches, anticipation builds around how the Badgers will perform in this exciting season opener.
