Wisconsin Hunters Prepare for Challenging Gun-Deer Season
Hunters in Wisconsin are gearing up for the start of the gun-deer season, which begins on Saturday morning. Preparations are already underway as many hunters venture into the woods to set up tree stands or secure their ideal locations. Despite the anticipation, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials caution that the prospects for a successful season are dim.
In 2023, the deer harvest totaled approximately 174,000, marking a 17% decrease from 2022. Officials attribute the anticipated low yield this year to the season occurring during the latest possible dates, coinciding with the end of the rutting season, which results in reduced daytime deer movement. As a consequence, hunters may face additional challenges this year.
Furthermore, hunters in Ashland and Iron counties will not have access to antlerless permits, adding to the constraints of the season. However, those possessing a junior license can utilize an antlerless license statewide, providing some flexibility within the hunt.
Jeff Pritzl, the DNR state deer program specialist, emphasized the importance of distinguishing between private and public land. «Private land is just that, and trespass rights belong to the landowner,» advised Pritzl. He recommended that hunters venturing near private properties should proactively communicate with landowners to avoid misunderstandings.
The DNR also highlighted the significance of safety awareness during the hunting season. Surprisingly, it is often the seasoned hunters, rather than newcomers, who neglect safety protocols due to complacency. «The folks that are more prone to have an accident or create a mistake aren’t the new hunters or the young inexperienced hunters, because it’s fresh in their mind,» Pritzl explained.
The department reported no hunting-related fatalities in Wisconsin last year and is hopeful for a similar outcome this year. The overarching message from the DNR is for everyone to enjoy the hunt while prioritizing safety and responsible decision-making.
