Women’s Football Match Between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid Suspended Due to Severe Weather
A scheduled women’s football match between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad was cancelled due to severe weather conditions in San Sebastián, as announced by Liga F authorities. The fixture, which was set to take place at 14:00, experienced a delay before the decision was made to suspend it entirely because of strong winds affecting the area.
The weather disturbance, caused by Storm Bert, led to an orange weather alert for high winds across the Basque region, impacting the city of San Sebastián where a tree had reportedly been felled at Real Sociedad’s sports grounds. This incident highlighted safety concerns for both players and spectators, prompting the meeting cancellation.
Liga F officials decided on the suspension after conferring with match directors and team representatives. The postponement marks Real Madrid‘s second such inconvenience this season, with a previous fixture against Levante also delayed due to extreme weather conditions. Real Madrid were looking to recover from a recent 0-4 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish league, having recently achieved success in the Champions League by defeating Twente 2-3.
Real Sociedad also entered the match bolstered by a strong performance streak, having avoided defeat in their last three games, reflecting their competitive challenge within the league. However, the same adverse weather that affected Real Madrid’s schedule has compounded their fixture congestion compared to major rivals such as Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
The local government had urged residents and visitors to exercise caution due to the expected weather intensity, advising people to avoid proximity to potentially hazardous structures. This guidance was in effect around the venue, where both teams and fans had convened for the now-suspended encounter of matchday 11 in Liga F.
