World Environment Day: A Global Call to Action for Land Restoration and Drought Resilience
On the occasion of World Environment Day, an annual event organized by the United Nations (UN) and hosted this year by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the focus shifts to the pressing issues of land restoration, drought resilience, and desertification. The event, to be held in Bangkok, brings together key stakeholders from across Asia and the Pacific, highlighting the critical need for environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
During the opening session, distinguished speakers from the UN, including the Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator for Thailand, will set the stage for discussions on ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will shed light on the Decade of Ecosystems Restoration, emphasizing the urgency of these efforts.
A deep dive into restoration initiatives will feature organizations such as WWF Nepal, FAO Small Island Developing States program, and Wetlands International Indonesia, showcasing successful projects aimed at restoring degraded ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots.
As the event progresses, the focus will shift to preparing for future challenges, particularly in the face of climate change. Experts from the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan will share insights on groundwater management, urban water systems, and Japan’s approach to combating marine plastic pollution, underlining the need for global cooperation.
The flagship event will culminate in a high-level session celebrating World Environment Day 2024, with representatives from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and key UN agencies underscoring the importance of collective action. Local government initiatives from Bangkok and success stories like the Living Indus Initiative will be highlighted to inspire further environmental conservation efforts.
World Environment Day serves as a global platform to address land degradation, desertification, and drought resilience. By fostering collaboration and innovative solutions, the event aims to rally support for a sustainable future and a healthier planet for generations to come.
