WTO Director General Calls for Consistency in Nigeria’s Social Policies
The Director General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged for the establishment of a social contract in Nigeria that ensures consistency in policies, regardless of political changes.
Speaking at the 2024 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference held in Lagos, she emphasized the necessity of maintaining robust economic and social policies that should not be altered with successive administrations.
Okonjo-Iweala, recognized as a leading development economist, delivered her keynote address titled ‘A Social Contract for Nigeria’s Future’ at the Eko Hotel & Suites.
During her address, she criticized the prevalent ‘not-in-my-administration syndrome’ in governance, asserting that it has hindered Nigeria’s economic growth.
The Director General called upon all Nigerians to unite and establish fundamental policies that remain protected from political shifts. She suggested that these core policies should be legislated after comprehensive public engagement.
Furthermore, Okonjo-Iweala stressed the importance of introducing further reforms while ensuring policy stability, in order to guide the nation towards the goal of effective governance.
