Wwii Veteran And Renowned Community Builder Remembered For Heroism And Kindness

Renowned WWII veteran and community builder, Roland Montgomery Armitage, who bravely fought in pivotal battles such as the D-Day landings in Normandy, passed away at the age of 99 at the Perley Health’s veterans’ home.

Armitage, born in South March Township, enlisted in the army at just 17 and served with the 3rd Medium Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery, landing on the shores of Juno Beach shortly after the initial D-Day invasion.

During his service, Armitage fought in intense battles in locations like Caen in France and Holland, where he displayed remarkable courage and heroism, despite sustaining injuries that left him permanently deaf in one ear.

One poignant moment he shared was the rescue of two Dutch children near Eindhoven. His act of kindness and compassion left a lasting impact, with one of the children, Sonja Jobes, reuniting with Armitage decades later as an adult.

Armitage’s legacy extended beyond his military service as he became a respected veterinarian, practicing initially in Shawville and later relocating to Dunrobin. He also held significant roles in the sports community, managing Rideau Carleton Raceway and earning inductions into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Armitage served as the mayor of West Carleton and made substantial contributions to the community, earning honors like the Order of Ottawa and the Order of Ontario.

Armitage’s impact was felt far and wide, with his passing marking the end of an era for those who knew and admired him. A celebration of his life is set to take place at the Highland Park Funeral Home in Carp on July 13, honoring his remarkable achievements and lasting legacy.
