Yankees Acquire J.D. Davis from Athletics to Bolster Injured Lineup
Seeking reinforcements amidst a string of injuries, the New York Yankees have made a significant acquisition by bringing in first baseman J.D. Davis from the Oakland Athletics, along with cash considerations. The deal saw minor league infielder Jordan Groshans heading the other way in the trade as the Yankees look to bolster their lineup.
Davis, a seasoned right-handed hitter with notable power, had a decent stint with the Athletics, where he posted a .232 average with four home runs and five RBIs in 135 plate appearances. The 31-year-old veteran has played in various Major League teams, including the Houston Astros, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, and now the A’s.
The Yankees are grappling with injuries to key players, with first baseman Rizzo sidelined due to a right forearm injury suffered on June 16, and designated hitter Stanton nursing a left hamstring strain after an incident on the field. In response, New York has called up Ben Rice from the minors to step in for Rizzo during his recovery.
As part of the trade, the Yankees sent Groshans to the Athletics. Groshans, a 24-year-old infielder, has showcased potential in the minor leagues this year, hitting .232 with one home run and 15 RBIs across 50 games with the Yankees’ affiliate teams. Groshans was claimed by New York off waivers from the Miami Marlins in February.
Looking ahead, A’s manager Mark Kotsay expressed his views on Groshans’ potential role in the team, suggesting that the young infielder could see time at Double-A to hone his skills and provide valuable depth in the middle infield positions. With players like Jack Wilson and Nick Allen contributing to the minor league rosters, the addition of Groshans adds versatility and reliability to the Athletics’ infield lineup.
