Young Aussie Breaker J Attack Shines Despite Tough Competition in Paris 2024
Australian teen breaker J Attack, known as Jeff Dunne, had a tough outing at the Paris 2024 breaking competition, failing to win any of his battles, but still managed to impress with his performance.
The 16-year-old faced competitors more than twice his age and stood out in his full Australian Olympic tracksuit, contrasting with the more casual looks of many other breakers.
Although he didn’t secure a win in any of his three round robin battles, J Attack caught the attention of a judge during two of the rounds, making sure Australia didn’t have a total shutout in this historic Olympic event.
His first battle against Ukraine’s Kuzya was challenging, with Kuzya winning both rounds and only one judge voting for J Attack. Commentators praised Kuzya for his flow and musicality, which are crucial in breaking.
In his second showdown against France’s Dany Dann, J Attack was again outclassed as Dann dominated the rounds, winning unanimously. Dany Dann had claimed that many dancers tend to lose their connection to the music while stressing about big moves, which is where he saw his opportunity.
Finally, J Attack faced Canada’s Phil Wizard in the third battle. Although he managed to earn one vote from a judge, it was clear that Wizard had a stronger connection to the music and brought a varied routine to the floor.
Despite finishing last in his group with no wins and only two votes from a possible 54, commentators were quick to highlight J Attack’s ambition and skill, suggesting he could be a name to watch in future competitions.
As the breaking event wraps up in Paris, there’s a looming concern as breaking may not return for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, marking this as a potentially historic moment for the sport.
In other news during the Paris Games, Australian Jessica Hull has made headlines by securing a medal in the 1500m, bringing joy to the Aussie track and field team.
