Zadina Close to Signing with New NHL Team Amidst Missed Opportunities
Free-agent forward Filip Zadina is nearing an agreement with a new NHL team, although reports linking him to the Buffalo Sabres are incorrect. Zadina’s agent, Darren Ferris, stated that he is finalizing a contract with a different team.
Zadina, selected sixth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, played for the San Jose Sharks last season. After being non-tendered as a restricted free agent by Detroit, he joined the Sharks on a one-year deal worth $1.1 million. During his last season, he scored 13 goals and accumulated 23 points in 72 games, marking his career high for goals.
Despite posting a successful goal total last year, Zadina has struggled to maintain consistent performance throughout his career. He previously played 30 games with the Red Wings in the 2022-23 season, where he scored three goals and earned seven points. His overall statistics included 190 appearances and 68 points across five seasons with Detroit.
As Zadina approaches his 25th birthday this November, he is still seeking to make an impact in the NHL. After a series of underwhelming performances characterized by a low shooting percentage and poor possession metrics, the Sharks chose not to extend a qualifying offer after his contract ended, leaving him as an unrestricted free agent.
Currently, Zadina is exploring options for professional tryouts rather than seeking opportunities overseas, indicating his ambition to remain in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres have reshaped their forward group and previously considered signing him as a low-risk option for depth scoring.
If Zadina successfully signs with a team, it may likely be a two-way contract. However, roster competition means that if he does join the Sabres, he could initially begin the season with their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans.
