Johannesburg – Zizi Kodwa has officially stepped down as a member of Parliament for the ANC. This decision comes as he faces serious corruption charges, and he communicated his resignation through a letter sent to ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.

The former party spokesperson is currently embroiled in a case where he allegedly accepted R1.7 million in bribes from businessman Jehan Mackay. The charges stem from his time as deputy minister of State Security.

Despite the ANC’s policy prohibiting individuals facing criminal charges from holding positions in leadership or government, Kodwa was recently nominated to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education.

In a statement, ANC acting national spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi announced that Kodwa’s resignation was accepted and that it was effective immediately.

Both Kodwa and Mackay appeared in court earlier this month to answer to the corruption charges. They were instructed to avoid any contact with six witnesses slated to testify against them.

The allegations suggest that Kodwa received payments totaling R1.68 million, including funding for seaside villas in an upscale area of Cape Town, in exchange for an IT software tender.

Presently, both defendants are out on R30,000 bail with their next court appearance scheduled for August 21. They intend to plead not guilty to the charges.
