Israel Lebanon Conflict

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that an Israeli tank fired at a UN peacekeeper watchtower in southern Lebanon. The incident was described as “apparently deliberate fire” at UNIFIL’s position, with both the tower and its surveillance cameras being damaged. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have not yet commented on the situation.

The incident follows a week of increasing cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. Lebanese authorities report that Israeli airstrikes in the south have resulted in 16 fatalities, including the mayor of Nabatieh, Ahmad Kahil, who was killed during a municipal meeting. Israel asserts these strikes aimed to target Hezbollah bases in the area. Meanwhile, Beirut experienced Israeli airstrikes for the first time in five days.

In retaliation, Hezbollah has intensified rocket attacks on Israeli positions in southern Lebanon and northern Israeli cities such as Safed. The IDF has stated that it successfully targeted and “eliminated” Jalal Mustafa Hariri, a leader within a Hezbollah unit in the Qana region, though Hezbollah has not confirmed this information.

The conflict has drawn the attention of international powers. The United States has called for a diplomatic resolution, emphasizing that military actions could either create space for diplomacy or have the opposite effect. The US Government has expressed its desire to see Lebanon break its political deadlock without engaging in regime change, focusing on allowing the Lebanese people to elect a new president.

Meanwhile, humanitarian concerns in Gaza are mounting. The US has pressured Israel to increase humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip, following a letter from Washington expressing concern over the deteriorating conditions. An emergency UN Security Council meeting, called by Britain, France, and Algeria, further addressed the humanitarian crisis, with the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, ensuring US vigilance to prevent a “policy of starvation” in Gaza.

In the ongoing conflict, Lebanon’s health ministry has reported numerous Israeli strikes over recent days, including attacks near the Baalbek-Riyaq highway and the fatalities occurring as a result. The overall toll from the conflict has risen significantly since this phase of the confrontation began in October of the previous year.

As the violence continues, calls from various global leaders, including Jordan‘s foreign minister Ayman Safadi, have urged for restraint, warning about the potential expansion of the conflict should airspace violations continue. Jordan has temporarily closed its airspace in response to heightened tensions.
