Escalating Tensions in the Middle East: Israeli Airstrikes and International Reactions
On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes struck a school compound in the central Gaza town of Deir al-Balah, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The UN and various international organizations have expressed concern over the increase in attacks on civilian infrastructure in Gaza, as the region remains a volatile battleground.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the airstrike was a targeted operation aimed at what it described as a “command and control center” used by Hamas operatives. The IDF emphasized that multiple measures were taken to minimize civilian casualties, including the use of precise munitions and gathering intelligence.
In contrast, Hamas has consistently denied using schools and other civilian sites for military purposes. A statement from the Israeli military also mentioned that the target within the school compound was embedded with military assets posing a threat to Israel.
Meanwhile, in Gaza’s northern region, Kamal Adwan Hospital, located in the Jabalia refugee camp, had to evacuate its neonatal intensive care unit due to continued violence. Medical Aid for Palestinians, a UK-based charity, relocated the infants to the Patient Friends Hospital in Gaza City, as essential services at Kamal Adwan were forced to shut down amid escalating attacks.
The violence has not been confined to Gaza alone. In southern Lebanon, five health workers were reportedly killed in Israeli air strikes. Walid Hachache, the head of operations at Lebanon’s government-run Civil Defense, stated that their emergency team was working at a makeshift center in Derdghaiya when it came under attack.
According to reports from Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, these workers were on alert for emergency calls when the airstrike occurred. The ministry condemned the assault, deeming it a blatant disregard for international law and humanitarian norms.
In recent conflicts, Lebanese territories have faced increased military activity, with the UN noting that nearly a quarter of the country has been subjected to evacuation orders from Israel. Despite assurances from Israeli authorities about the precision of their strikes, incidents such as these have drawn widespread condemnation from international humanitarian bodies.
Adding to the regional instability, tensions further escalated following Hezbollah‘s launch of projectiles into northern Israel, prompting swift retaliatory strikes by the Israeli military. The IDF claimed responsibility for killing two key Hezbollah commanders involved in attacks on Israel.
