ESPN’s College GameDay Faces Technical Glitches During Orange Bowl Pregame
ESPN‘s College GameDay experienced a series of technical mishaps during its pregame coverage of the Orange Bowl between Notre Dame and Penn State at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla. The flagship college football show faced audio issues when former Alabama head coach Nick Saban‘s microphone failed during his analysis, leaving viewers in silence for over 12 seconds.
Host Rece Davis quickly intervened, informing Saban of the issue. “Hey just a second. I’m told we don’t have your mic right now, don’t want to miss these points,” Davis said. “Let’s see if we can get that straightened out and get Nick’s mic there.” Despite attempts to fix the problem, the glitch persisted before eventually being resolved, allowing Saban to continue his commentary.
This incident follows another technical issue during ESPN’s coverage of the College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Notre Dame and Georgia last week. The network’s SkyCast camera malfunctioned, providing distorted crowd shots and even flipping upside down at one point. The issue forced ESPN to revert to conventional camera angles for nearly an hour while technicians worked to repair the equipment.
Adding to the pregame drama, longtime College GameDay analyst Lee Corso, 89, stumbled during a live segment while dressed as a leprechaun. Corso, who was performing an Irish jig, was caught by Notre Dame’s mascot before hitting the ground. Social media reactions ranged from concern to humor, with one fan commenting, “Damn Lee Corso almost fell and broke a hip,” while another questioned, “Man Lee Corso can barely stand up on his own, what type of contract they got him in man.”
Despite the setbacks, the show continued, with Saban providing his usual sharp analysis. The seven-time national champion, in his first year as a College GameDay analyst after retiring from coaching, has been praised for his insightful commentary and engaging personality. “He’s knowledgeable, charming, and provides a certain ruggedness that makes Saban who he is,” said one observer.
The winner of the Orange Bowl between No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 6 Penn State will advance to face the winner of the semifinal between No. 5 Texas and No. 8 Ohio State. The College Football Playoff National Championship game is set for January 20 in Atlanta.
