Espn Cuts Griffin And Ponder Amid Budget Cuts

ESPN has recently let go of two notable sports figures, Robert Griffin III and Samantha Ponder, both linked to Florida State University. The firings are said to be part of budget cuts as the network prepares for the upcoming fiscal year.

Robert Griffin III, known as RG3 from his college days at Baylor and his NFL career, was a rising star on ESPN after joining the network in 2021. Over the past two seasons, he brought an enthusiastic energy to the role of college football and NFL analyst.

However, his tenure took a turn when he was replaced on ‘Monday Night Countdown’ earlier this season. Griffin had two years left on his contract, but reports indicate that his large salary will still be honored by the network despite his departure.

The decision to let him go might have been influenced by a recent social media exchange with ESPN host Paul Finebaum. Finebaum made comments implying that the Florida State football team was suffering from a ‘hangover’ after missing the College Football Playoff last year. Griffin, who defended FSU on social media, appeared to clash with Finebaum, although ESPN has not confirmed if this played a role in his firing.

Samantha Ponder, who has been with ESPN since 2011, also faced the axe yesterday. She was the host of ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ and had previously covered ‘Saturday Night Football.’ Her husband, Christian Ponder, is a former quarterback at Florida State and was drafted into the NFL in 2011.

The pink slips given to Griffin and Ponder highlight the changing landscape at ESPN as it navigates through financial evaluations. Possible replacements for Ponder are already being discussed, with names like Laura Rutledge and Mike Greenberg coming up for consideration.
