Ethel Kennedy, the beloved matriarch of one of America’s most prominent political families, is currently hospitalized following a stroke. The 96-year-old widow of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy experienced the health scare on Thursday, October 5, 2024, while sleeping, as reported by her grandson, Joe Kennedy III.

In a statement released on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Joe Kennedy III stated, “She is comfortable, she is getting the best care possible, and she is surrounded by family. She is, as you may know, a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life. We are here looking after her.” The former Massachusetts Congressman also requested that the public keep Ethel in their thoughts and prayers while respecting the family’s privacy.

The Kennedy family noted that Ethel Kennedy had been enjoying an active summer filled with family activities. Joe Kennedy III highlighted this period as a cherished time, citing family gatherings including lunches and dinners with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. “It has been a gift to all of us and to her as well,” he wrote in his heartfelt message.

Ethel Kennedy was honored earlier this year on her 96th birthday, celebrated in April with family members, including her son Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Cheryl Hines. Photos shared by Joe Kennedy III on social media captured warm family interactions and Ethel’s joyous presence.

Born in 1928, Ethel Kennedy married Robert F. Kennedy in 1950. The couple had a total of eleven children together. Tragically, Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968 during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. At the time, Ethel was pregnant with their youngest daughter, Rory.

Ethel Kennedy’s contributions and public service have also been recognized over the years. In 2014, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her dedication to various causes including human rights, environmental protection, and social justice. This prestigious award is the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States government.
