Ezekiel Elliott Joins Chargers Practice Squad Ahead of Playoffs
Running back Ezekiel Elliott has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday night. The move comes just days before the Chargers face the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Weekend opener on Saturday.
Elliott, 29, was released by the Dallas Cowboys last week after requesting his departure to join a playoff-contending team. The two-time NFL rushing champion had a limited role in Dallas this season, rushing for 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries. His release marked the end of his second stint with the Cowboys, where he initially became one of the league’s most dominant running backs.
The Chargers, led by head coach Jim Harbaugh, are in need of depth at running back. Starting rusher J.K. Dobbins recently returned from a knee sprain, while backup Isaiah Spiller has missed the past two games due to an ankle injury. Elliott’s experience and ability in pass protection could provide valuable support as the team prepares for postseason play.
Despite being past his prime, Elliott remains a reliable option in short-yardage and goal-line situations. His familiarity with high-pressure games could prove beneficial for the Chargers, who are looking to make a deep playoff run. However, Elliott will need to quickly adapt to Greg Roman‘s offensive scheme to secure a spot on the gameday roster.
Head coach Mike McCarthy of the Cowboys praised Elliott’s contributions to the team, stating that his past success ‘earned this opportunity at his request.’ Elliott’s release was granted after he expressed a desire to pursue a playoff opportunity elsewhere. No team claimed him off waivers, allowing him to sign freely with the Chargers.
Elliott’s addition to the Chargers’ practice squad adds depth to a backfield that has dealt with injuries throughout the season. His presence could provide a boost as the team prepares for a challenging matchup against the Texans.
