Jake Matthews Falcons Nfl Injury News

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews is facing uncertainty ahead of this weekend’s game due to an ankle injury. Matthews, who has started 183 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL, did not participate in practice Wednesday or Thursday.

Falcons right guard Chris Lindstrom commented on Matthews’ impressive streak, jokingly referring to him as ‘the Terminator.’ He emphasized Matthews’ resilience, stating, ‘You don’t get to 183 without having to overcome a lot of challenges.’ Matthews, who has not missed a game since September 2014, is widely regarded for his professionalism and work ethic.

Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. praised Matthews as well, calling his durability ‘crazy’ for the way he maintains his physical health. The 12th-year lineman attributes his longevity largely to genetics, crediting his father, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, for his own ability to stay on the field.

If Matthews is unable to play, the Falcons may opt to start Michael Jerrell at left tackle. Jerrell, who joined the team in a late-August trade, filled in for Matthews during last week’s game and expressed confidence in his performance despite the challenge. ‘It was a little crazy Sunday,’ he said. ‘I feel like I did okay. I could have done better.’

Jerrell’s flexibility as a swing tackle allows him to step in for either tackle position. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson indicated that, should Matthews miss time, Jerrell would likely remain at left tackle. The Falcons will consider all options but seem inclined to rely on Jerrell’s growing familiarity with the playbook.

As the Falcons prepare for their Week 7 matchup, they await updates on Matthews’ status and hope to maintain their offensive continuity, whether with him or without him.
