Fans Disappointed Over Casting Choices in ‘A Minecraft Movie’

LOS ANGELES, CA — Fans of ‘A Minecraft Movie‘ expressed disappointment after learning that comedian Matt Berry was initially cast to play the lead role of Steve but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, Jack Black stars as the lead, drawing mixed reactions from both audiences and critics.
Since the film’s release on Friday, audiences have been captivated by a scene in which Black’s character shouts the video game’s iconic line, “chicken jockey.” However, several viewers were vocal about their belief that the movie would have greatly benefited from Berry’s unique comedic style, particularly for that line.
One Twitter user remarked, “I’m definitely not saying ‘chicken jockey’ in the voice of Matt Berry right now…” while another expressed their desire to hear Berry perform the line: “Torn between ‘Matt Berry’s too good for that’ and ‘I want to hear him say chicken jockey.’” Similar sentiments echoed across social media, where fans shared their visuals of imagining Berry delivering the line.
In contrast, reviews have criticized Black’s performance. According to one critic, his portrayal provides “the air of a desperate clown at an under-attended children’s party.” While many enjoyed moments in the film, the question of what could have been with Berry remained on the minds of fans, with one expressing a sense of loss over the missed opportunity.
Despite mixed reviews, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ gathered a staggering $163 million in its opening weekend domestically and brought in an additional $150 million internationally. Footage shared online showed enthusiastic audience participation during screenings, with popcorn and drinks thrown as fans chanted lines together, fostering a lively atmosphere.
In response to this reaction, Cineworld has announced it will host “Chicken Jockey Screenings” on Sunday, April 13, encouraging fans to dress up and make noise during the film. “It’s all part of the fun,” they stated in a promotional announcement.
Director Jared Hess spoke to the phenomenon surrounding audience reactions, noting, “It’s been so bananas. People are sending me these really hilarious speeches that a lot of teenagers are giving right before the movie.” Hess acknowledged the wild dynamics at some screenings, saying, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called.”
In an unusual move prompted by rowdy behavior at screenings, some cinemas, including the Township Theatre in New Jersey, are now requiring that minors attend with an adult. This ban follows an incident where police were dispatched to manage particularly energetic viewers.
Despite the chaotic reactions, reflections from audiences reveal a sense of nostalgia and excitement, particularly among younger viewers, as they celebrate a film that channels their beloved video game. As one audience member shared, “Watching the movie was a glorious experience; we all yelled ‘CHICKEN JOCKEY’ during the reactions.”
Ultimately, while the casting of Black has been met with criticism, the film has still managed to create memorable moments for fans, proving that even a polarizing production can spark joy in audiences.
