I 80 Tunnel Crash Smoke Fire Wyoming

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — A fiery crash inside the Green River Tunnel on Interstate 80 resulted in at least two fatalities and five injuries late Friday morning. The incident occurred around 11:37 a.m. as heavy smoke and flames billowed from the tunnel, prompting a swift evacuation of the area.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the crash involved multiple vehicles, which raised concerns about the structural integrity of the tunnel. Witnesses reported chaos as bystanders fled the scene to safety amid the smoke and the sound of exploding tires.

“My heart is broken for the families and loved ones of the victims of this tragedy,” said Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Director Darin Westby in a statement. “My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are involved. WYDOT and WHP remain on scene to assist local emergency responders and provide additional support and traffic control.”

Firefighters faced considerable challenges accessing the scene due to limited visibility and hazardous conditions within the tunnel. “The smoke and debris made it difficult for first responders to get in immediately after the crash,” said Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas Warren.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation reported that geologists and bridge engineers were dispatched to the location to assess the damage to the tunnel infrastructure, which may have been compromised due to the fire.

The highway remained closed in both directions Friday evening, with eastbound lanes being utilized for first responder staging. Motorists have been advised to obey speed limits through detours and expect delays.

“We want to express our sincerest appreciation to first responders in Sweetwater County for their support and assistance in responding to this tragic crash,” said Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Col. Karl Germain. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Department is expected to provide further information regarding the crash as investigations continue.
