ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The highly anticipated 2025 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is set to kick off the NTT INDYCAR Series this weekend, transforming the city streets into a bustling hub of racing enthusiasm from February 28 to March 2. The grand prix will attract around 200,000 fans, eager to witness the season’s opening event as it launches a new era in motorsport with exciting changes.

This year marks the first time all INDYCAR races will air exclusively on FOX, offering fans unprecedented access to the 17-race series. Anticipation has been building not just for the races but also for numerous qualifying events, fan activities, and practices leading up to the main event. The race will cover a 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit that runs through downtown St. Petersburg and includes sections of the Albert Whitted Airport runway.

“The roar of the V6 engines brings a unique energy to St. Petersburg,” said Mayor Ken Welch. “We’re eager to welcome fans and racers alike for what has become a significant event on our city calendar.”

The main race is scheduled for Sunday, March 2, at 12:30 p.m. ET, following a series of practice and qualifying runs earlier in the weekend. Notably, Friday will see the first practice session at 3 p.m. ET, allowing drivers to acclimate to the intricate street course.

This year’s race will also be marked by a significant technological shift, with cars equipped with new hybrid power units. These ultracapacitor-based systems were introduced in the 2024 season and provide a lighter, quicker energy boost compared to traditional battery systems. Two-time GRAND PRIX winner Colton Herta highlighted the challenges these changes present for drivers. “Transitioning to hybrid power makes the handling more complex. It will be interesting to see how we all adapt during the races,” Herta stated.

Additionally, this year marks the starting point for Josef Newgarden, who looks to bounce back after a controversial championship disqualification last season. Newgarden, who belongs to Team Penske, is determined to make a strong impression this year. “I’ve put that behind me and am ready to perform,” he remarked. Newgarden finished strong in recent testing sessions at Sebring International Raceway, where he clocked competitive lap times.

In terms of preparations, organizers have ensured seamless logistics for attendees, including accessible parking and free shuttle services from Tropicana Field to the racecourse. Parking fees at designated lots will be set at $30 per day, with numerous children’s ticket specials available.

For those unable to attend, FOX 13 will broadcast the event live, kicking off the telecast at noon ET, bringing the excitement of the race directly to homes across the nation. The event promises a spirited mix of speed, technology, and community, embodying the heart of the INDYCAR spirit.
