San Antonio, TX – The Florida Gators secured their spot in the NCAA national championship game by defeating Auburn 79-73 in the Final Four on Saturday night. The standout performance of All-America guard Walter Clayton Jr. was crucial in leading the Gators to their first title game appearance since their consecutive championships in 2006 and 2007.

Clayton scored 34 points and made five 3-pointers, showcasing his scoring prowess throughout the tournament. His achievement marks the first time a player has recorded consecutive 30-point games at this stage of the competition since Larry Bird in 1979.

<p“Clayton was the difference,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. “We couldn’t contain him down that end.”

Clayton’s performance was pivotal, especially in the critical moments of the game. He managed to score 13 points in the final eight minutes of their second-round victory over UConn and stepped up again against Texas Tech with late-game 3-pointers to help his team overcome a nine-point deficit.

“I’m just used to seeing him put the ball in the basket,” Gators coach Todd Golden said. “In big moments, he hit huge shots and made winning plays when we needed it the most.”

Florida (35-4) also relied on contributions from guard Alijah Martin, who added 17 points, and Thomas Haugh, who chipped in 12. The Gators continued their momentum from a strong second half, outscoring Auburn 41-27.

Auburn had taken an eight-point lead into halftime, with Johni Broome and Chad Baker-Mazara leading their efforts. Broome netted 15 points despite playing with an injury to his right elbow, while Baker-Mazara led the Tigers with 18 points.

“Auburn had us on our heels in the first half, but we came out with a great start in the second half and we didn’t look back,” Golden said.

With this victory, Florida will face Houston, who won their semifinal matchup against Duke, in the championship game on Monday night. The Gators are looking to win their third national championship, having first appeared in the title game in 2000.

“We’re just all together, on the court and off the court,” Clayton said after the game. “We have confidence in each other.”

The matchup marks a significant moment in SEC history, as Florida has the opportunity to secure the league’s first national title since Kentucky’s victory in 2012.

“I feel like we got the looks that we wanted to get,” Broome said. “I wasn’t able to capitalize and finish them.”

As the Gators gear up for the championship game, they carry an 11-game winning streak. They and their fans are hoping for a strong performance to cap off an impressive tournament run.
