Margaritaville License Plate Design Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Florida is on the verge of launching a special license plate to honor the late Jimmy Buffett, the beloved musician known for his hit song “Margaritaville.” More than a year after lawmakers authorized the plate, a final design is nearly ready as it approaches the required number of pre-sale orders.

The design showcases a scenic beach background with a red parrot and the word “Margaritaville,” along with Buffalo’s iconic seaplane, Hemisphere Dancer, which is referenced in his song “Jamaica Mistaica.” To go into production, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle department mandates a minimum of 3,000 pre-sale orders. Currently, the initiative is just under 200 orders short.

The idea for the plate was introduced shortly after Buffett’s death from Merkel-cell carcinoma on September 1, 2023. It was prompted by a bill filed by Rep. Linda Chaney of St. Petersburg, expressing the desire to commemorate Buffett’s impact on Florida culture.

Delaney Buffett, the musician’s daughter, shared her thoughts on the project, stating, “He would be so proud that his legacy includes continuing to give back through Singing for Change, and that it involves Florida license plates. I know he would get a kick out of it.” The annual fee for the specialty plate will contribute to Buffett’s nonprofit initiative, Singing for Change, which funds various philanthropic efforts.

Drowning is also a significant concern following Buffett’s legacy, as it is the leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 4 in Florida. In light of this, funds raised from the plate’s sales will support rebuilding efforts in natural disaster-stricken Florida communities, enhancing their infrastructure against future calamities.

Alongside the plate, legslation introduced by former Sen. Lauren Book aims to designate a portion of A1A State Road as “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway,” further solidifying his impact on the state. Governor Ron DeSantis approved both bills last June, marking a significant tribute to Buffett’s legacy as an influential figure in Florida.

As the state awaits the final approval for the license plates, supporters remain optimistic about the pre-sale effort, hoping that enthusiasts and fans of Buffett can show their appreciation through their vehicles.
