Former Bangladesh Captain Tamim Iqbal Hospitalized After Chest Pain During Match

SAVAR, Bangladesh — Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal was rushed to the hospital on Monday after experiencing severe chest pain during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match.
The incident occurred during the first innings of a 50-over match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club at the BKSP ground. Tamim, who is 36 years old, felt discomfort while fielding. According to match referee Debabrata Paul, the initial plan was to airlift him to the hospital; however, he could not be transported by helicopter.
“He complained of having chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent initial medical checks,” said Debashish Chowdhury, the chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. “There were mild heart issues suspected, and he was monitored closely.”
After undergoing an ECG and some blood tests, it was noted that he had experienced a significant heart incident. “We were informed on the way to the helipad that he was feeling uncomfortable again, leading to the decision to return him to the hospital,” Chowdhury added.
Since the episode, Tamim has been placed under observation at Fazilatunnesa Hospital. He is currently receiving medical attention as family members travel to be with him.
“It is a difficult time for all of us. The medical team is doing everything they can to ensure a speedy recovery,” Chowdhury said.
Tamim Iqbal, who made his international debut in 2007, has had a distinguished career, playing 243 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 70 Tests, and 78 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for Bangladesh, accumulating more than 15,000 runs across all formats. He announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2025, a decision he had briefly reversed last year, only to step away before the 2023 ICC World Cup due to injury.
The cricket community has expressed concern and support for Tamim’s health, as fans and fellow cricketers await further updates regarding his condition.
