Former High School Basketball Star Mikey Williams Commits To Ucf

Former high school basketball star Mikey Williams has made his college commitment, choosing the University of Central Florida (UCF) as his new destination. The announcement came just days after Williams departed from his previous school, Memphis. Williams, who gained fame for his dunking skills and viral YouTube mixtapes, took to Instagram to share the news. In his post, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to him by UCF, stating, ‘All I needed was a chance.’

Williams initially signed with Memphis as part of their 2023 recruiting class. However, his time at the university was marred by a legal incident. Last spring, he was arrested following an alleged shooting at his residence, resulting in multiple felony charges. However, in November, Williams pleaded guilty to a lesser felony charge of making criminal threats. As part of his plea agreement, he may have the charge reduced to a misdemeanor if he fulfills certain requirements before his sentencing in August. Despite never playing a game for Memphis, Williams remained away from the team during the entire legal process.

Memphis was previously working on the process for Williams to join their men’s basketball program. However, the player decided to explore other options and entered the transfer portal. Subsequently, he chose UCF as his new home. The University of Central Florida confirmed Williams’ decision in a statement, acknowledging his potential addition to their basketball team.

Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and boasting 3.6 million followers on Instagram, Williams had been regarded as a five-star prospect during his high school career. He captivated national attention with his gravity-defying dunks and captivating YouTube highlight reels. Now, he looks to begin his collegiate career at UCF, following the path of many other talented basketball players who have excelled at the university.

UCF’s men’s basketball team has been making headlines recently, particularly after a stunning upset victory over the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. The team, currently holding a 10-4 record, will face BYU next before embarking on a challenging trip to Texas and Houston.
