Nfl Free Agent Running Backs 2025

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — With the NFL free agency period starting soon, several standout running backs are set to become available, prompting teams to consider how they can enhance their backfield. Among them is Saquon Barkley, who, after his record-breaking season, is expected to attract significant interest and shape the running back market.

Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, set the single-season rushing record (including postseason) and played a pivotal role in the Eagles claiming their second Lombardi Trophy. His performance has drawn attention to the importance of the running back position, which some argue has been undervalued in recent years.

Yet, while Barkley stands out, several other running backs are poised to make an impact this offseason. For instance, Nick Chubb, a former elite runner for the Cleveland Browns, is expected to test free agency after a serious knee injury. Chubb will turn 30 this year, and with his recent health struggles, he may not command a top-dollar contract. However, he is still viewed as a valuable asset for a competitive team, potentially pairing well with the Los Angeles Rams as a complement to emerging talents.

Aaron Jones, who posted another 1,000-yard rushing season with the Green Bay Packers, also merits attention. At age 30, he remains one of the top options on the market. With the Denver Broncos looking to solidify their running game following a successful season under rookie quarterback Bo Nix, Jones could serve as an essential asset, offering versatility in both rushing and receiving roles.

Najee Harris, previously with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is another name to watch. With ties to head coach Brian Daboll from their days at Alabama, the New York Giants could be an ideal destination for him. Harris would add depth to the Giants’ backfield as they navigate quarterback options for the future, providing a supporting role — which the team might need if they secure a high-profile rookie this year.

J.K. Dobbins, currently with the Los Angeles Chargers, presents a dual scenario. While he might opt to re-sign with the Chargers due to a solid fit, his extensive injury history will likely give pause to potential suitors. However, the Dallas Cowboys, having lost Ezekiel Elliott, could view Dobbins as a prime candidate to enhance their offense further.

Meanwhile, Rico Dowdle emerged as a surprise during the last season with the Cowboys, rushing for significant yardage. Now entering free agency, the New England Patriots are a likely contender for Dowdle, especially as they seek to revamp their running attack under new head coach Mike Vrabel.

Lastly, Javonte Williams is another intriguing prospect, having previously played under Curtis Modkins with the Denver Broncos. Now trying to make a comeback from his severe knee injury, the Minnesota Vikings could look to him as a way to rejuvenate their backfield.

This offseason’s free-agent running backs may not be all superstars, but their potential impact on teams looking to shore up their rushing attacks is significant. As teams begin to assess their strategies, it will be interesting to see where these talented players land and how they reshape the dynamics of the NFL.
