TULSA, Okla. — Country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood recently reminisced about their intimate wedding nearly two decades ago amid promotions for NBC‘s upcoming special, “Opry 100: A Live Celebration.” The couple exchanged vows in front of just 77 guests at their home on December 10, 2005, a stark contrast to the large crowds they are accustomed to.

Reflecting on their wedding day, Brooks said, “Everybody thought I was getting married in the red dress,” referring to Yearwood’s stunning ruby red gown, which she wore as guests arrived. For the ceremony, she changed into a traditional white wedding dress adorned with sparkly beads and a dramatic skirt.

Yearwood shared, “No one has ever really seen the dress. And everybody’s all about the dress,” highlighting how their wedding details remained mostly private. Only a couple of photos from that day were publicly released, adding to the air of mystery surrounding their nuptials.

The wedding cake was also a memorable moment. Yearwood asked her late mother, Gwen, to bake it, recalling, “My mom made wedding cakes for a living.” Despite her initial refusal, Gwen eventually agreed once she learned the wedding would be small.

“We’re on the farm in Oklahoma, and the bottom layer was massive,” Yearwood described. With an oven door that wouldn’t close, they relied on a friend nearby with a larger oven. “It came out perfectly,” she said, and guests enjoyed the five-tiered sour cream pound cake.

As a proud stepmother to Brooks’ three daughters from his previous marriage, Yearwood has embraced her role in their blended family. Brooks sought the daughters’ approval before proposing, stating, “I said, ‘You gotta take care of her.’” Their youngest daughter, Allie, responded humorously, “We got your back, bra strap.”

Both Brooks and Yearwood continue to express their love for each other openly. In a recent interview, Brooks referred to Yearwood as his “queen,” while she expressed how her life changed dramatically since they became partners. “I thought I was happy before … I didn’t know this existed,” she said.

Now, as they celebrate their love and the legacy of the Grand Ole Opry, Brooks and Yearwood remain a quintessential country couple, showcasing their affection not just for each other but for their shared journey in music and family.

Fans can catch Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood as they participate in “Opry 100: A Live Celebration” airing live on NBC on March 19 at 8 p.m. ET.
