Gatineau Mayor France Bélisle Resigns Citing Health Concerns And Hostile Political Environment

Gatineau Mayor France Bélisle shocked the community by announcing her resignation after over two years in office due to health reasons and the toxic political atmosphere. During her departure speech, Bélisle highlighted the pressing need for a healthier political environment.

Bélisle expressed the toll that public service takes on one’s well-being, citing disillusionment, intimidation, lack of resources, intense pressure, and inter-elite tensions as contributing factors to her decision.

The outgoing mayor pointed out the imbalance between funding for independent versus party-affiliated officials, shedding light on challenges faced by independents like herself.

Following Bélisle’s announcement, reactions poured in from various political figures, such as Québec‘s Premier François Legault and Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest, who emphasized the importance of a conducive working environment within city councils.

Amid the resignation, Daniel Champagne steps in as the new interim mayor, championing a positive outlook for Gatineau’s future despite the circumstances surrounding Bélisle’s departure.

An election to select a new mayor will be held within four months, with Champagne ruling himself out as a candidate. The transition from Bélisle to Champagne marks a pivotal moment for Gatineau politics.

In a heartfelt statement, Gilles Desjardins, the President of Brigil, extended gratitude and well wishes to Bélisle, acknowledging her impactful leadership during challenging times in Gatineau.
