Gauff and Sinner Advance on Day Five of French Open

PARIS, France – Highlights from the fifth day of the French Open on Thursday, May 29, 2025, showed American second seed Coco Gauff claiming a strong victory. Gauff defeated Czech Republic’s Tereza Valentova with a score of 6-2, 6-4, advancing to the third round where she will face Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.
In the men’s division, top seed Jannik Sinner easily won against Richard Gasquet, a 38-year-old French player set to retire. Sinner triumphed with a score of 6-3, 6-0, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev, the third seed, overcame a challenging start to beat Netherlands’ Jesper De Jong in four sets: 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.
Arthur Fils, the 14th seed from France, played a thrilling match against Spain’s Jaume Munar. After four hours of play, Fils emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 2-6, 0-6, 6-4.
In an upset, Portuguese qualifier Henrique Rocha made headlines by defeating 19th seed Jakob Mensik in a five-set comeback: 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Rocha, ranked 200th in the world, is now set to face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the next round.
The day began under sunny skies with a temperature of around 19 degrees Celsius at Roland Garros. Although clouds are predicted for the afternoon, rain is not expected.
Other notable matches included American third seed Jessica Pegula defeating compatriot Ann Li 6-3, 7-6(3), setting her up for a third-round clash with Marketa Vondrousova. Mirra Andreeva, the sixth seed from Russia, cruised past American Ashlyn Krueger, winning 6-3, 6-4, to also move into the third round.
