Acc Tournament Basketball Teams Matchup

Charlotte, N.C. – Georgia Tech is set to face Virginia at 12 p.m. Wednesday in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, taking place at the Spectrum Center. This match is significant for both teams, with Georgia Tech seeking to capitalize on its momentum from the regular season.

The Yellow Jackets (16-15, 10-10 ACC) entered the tournament after securing their highest seed in four years, finishing eighth in the conference. Georgia Tech closed the regular season strong, winning five of its last seven games, including impressive home victories over NC State and Miami, and a road win against Pittsburgh.

“We’ve gained a lot of confidence with our recent performances,” said Georgia Tech head coach Damon Stoudamire. “We’re looking to build on that as we approach this critical tournament.”

Virginia (15-16, 8-12 ACC), on the other hand, finished in a five-way tie for ninth place but earned the No. 9 seed due to their record against those teams. They experienced a rocky finish, having lost four of their last six games, even after securing key wins earlier in the season, including a victory over Georgia Tech.

The Cavaliers defeated the Yellow Jackets earlier this season, winning 75-61 in Charlottesville on February 8. Head coach Tony Bennett noted that the win showcased his team’s potential. “We need to bring that same energy and focus into the tournament,” he stated.

The winner of this game will advance to take on Duke, the top-seeded team in the tournament, which adds further stakes to this matchup. NCAA tournament history shows that the pressure of a single-elimination format can lead to unpredictable outcomes.

Viewers can watch the game live on ESPN2, with streaming available on the ESPN app. Radio coverage will also be provided by the Georgia Tech Sports Network, accessible through flagship station 680 the Fan and Sirius XM channel 81.

Historically, Georgia Tech has participated in 44 ACC Tournaments, boasting a record of 29-40. They have claimed championships in 1985, 1990, 1993, and 2021, while also finishing as runners-up four times.

As this year’s tournament unfolds, both teams look to make a deep run, capitalizing on their respective strengths and strategies. “Every game counts now,” Stoudamire added. “We’re ready to prove ourselves.”
