San Francisco, CA – After the San Francisco Giants’ narrow 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on May 2, Manager Bob Melvin addressed the absence of outfielder Lee Jung-hoo from the starting lineup. Melvin noted that the decision to rest Lee was part of a strategy to keep the player healthy, especially given his recent playtime.

During a post-game interview, Melvin reflected on the defeat, stating, “Baseball is what can beat any team.” He emphasized that no team should be underestimated after the Giants lost to the Rockies, currently sitting at the bottom of the National League West. Lee was substituted in the eighth inning, a decision made for defensive strength, despite his earlier exclusion from the lineup.

“Matos is fine,” Melvin clarified, explaining that the decision was tactical rather than due to a performance issue from starting center fielder Luis Matos. “We had a one-point lead, and we needed a good defender.” However, the strategy fell short when pitcher Tyler Rogers allowed three hits and two runs in the eighth, resulting in a loss.

Melvin acknowledged Rogers’ unexpected performance, noting the pitcher had an impressive ERA of 0.59 prior to this game. “It doesn’t happen often,” he said, recognizing the ability of the Rockies’ lineup to capitalize on the situation. Despite a hit from Wilmer Flores in the bottom of the eighth, the Giants couldn’t capitalize, and Lee’s grounding out ended their chances of scoring.

Prior to the game, Melvin addressed Lee’s absence, explaining it as a planned rest to maintain his health. He mentioned, “Lee Jung-hoo hasn’t played many games in the last few years. We want him to stay healthy and will give him a planned holiday accordingly.” Lee had participated in 30 of 31 games this season, contributing significantly with a .319 on-base percentage.

Melvin emphasized the importance of taking care of players over the course of the season, as Lee had started 16 of the last 17 games. “It’s really tough not to put him in the lineup,” he admitted, especially after having lost the previous two games. Yet, he insisted on the need for breaks to preserve player stamina.

As the season progresses, Lee remains optimistic, aiming to bounce back after a brief dip in form and continue contributing to the Giants’ success.

The Giants next game is again against the Rockies, where the team hopes to capitalize on opportunities and improve their standings.
