Deonte Banks New York Giants Cornerback

The New York Giants have announced that they will start Deonte Banks at cornerback in their upcoming game against the Washington Commanders, despite his recent struggles and benching during the Monday night loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Brian Daboll confirmed this decision on Tuesday, stating, “He will start,” and expressed confidence that Banks will approach the week with the right mindset.

Banks, a first-round pick from the 2023 NFL draft, has faced criticism for his effort and performance this season. He was benched during the 26-18 loss to the Steelers after a series of questionable plays, including being hurdled by Steelers running back Najee Harris and missing a tackle on wide receiver George Pickens. This was the third time this season he has been benched due to performance issues.

Despite these challenges, Daboll remains supportive of Banks. “I’d say I’m focused on moving forward here with [Banks], and I think he’ll approach this week with the right mindset,” Daboll said. “We’ll do everything we can do to help him.” Banks has had some positive moments, such as excelling in a matchup against Seattle’s DK Metcalf earlier in the season, but he has mostly struggled, allowing four touchdowns as the nearest defender through eight games.

In addition to Banks, quarterback Daniel Jones will also remain the starter against the Commanders. Jones was also under scrutiny after the loss to the Steelers, but Daboll highlighted some of his positive performances during the game. “I think that [Jones] did some good things throughout the game,” Daboll said, noting Jones’s good decisions, checks, and throws down the field.
